Treating Sports Trauma Injuries at Children’s Dentistry of Charlottesville
Almost all sports dental injuries are a result of an impact to the face, either from another child, a ball, or a piece of equipment. Many of these injuries can result in the loss of your child’s tooth, either primary or adult. Even though your child’s primary teeth will be lost eventually, for younger children, primary teeth are needed for the proper development of their mouth.
We offer a variety of restorative dental procedures to treat these injuries effectively to ensure the continued normal development of your child’s teeth.
Common reasons for tooth pain can include:
- Tooth decay, resulting in cavities
- Broken or damaged tooth
- Tooth infection
Preventing Sports Injuries
Protecting the teeth and mouth is important at any age. Custom athletic mouth guards can help protect not only your child’s teeth, but reduce the risk of concussion. Our custom, personalized mouth guards are specially made to fit your child’s teeth for the most effective protection.
If your child participates in athletic activities, they’re a great candidate for a custom mouth guard. We strongly recommend a custom mouth guard to any child involved in sports, especially high-contact sports.

Sports Injury FAQ
How Safe are Custom Mouth Guards?
Very safe! Custom mouth guards offer the best fit and the most effective protection. Creating your child’s custom athletic mouth guard is a safe and simple process that will protect the investment you’ve made in their dental health.
Does My Child Need to Avoid Eating or Drinking Before A Custom Mouth Guard Fitting?
A custom mouth guard can be made without regard to recent food or drink consumption. Of course, a good brushing is recommended before the guard is fitted to keep things clean and sanitary. Eating or drinking before or after the fitting does not affect the process.
How Often Should My Child Get A Custom Mouth Guard Made?
Custom mouth guards are made to fit like a glove, and they will do so as long as your child’s teeth remain the same as when the guard was fitted. If your child notices their mouth guard no longer fits well, it could be a sign their teeth have shifted or they have grown. In this case, it may be a good idea to get a new custom mouth guard to fit them better.
